My purpose in publishing this site in eleven world languages is to carry my thoughts across the boundaries of language and bring them to the widest possible community of people. This demanding work I have taken on is part of a great ideal. That ideal has nothing to do with material gain or a desire for fame. Its source is a powerful sense of responsibility to write and to share that I have carried within me for years.
Throughout history, many writers have faced economic hardship; even so, they did not give up writing and sharing their thoughts with people. Today, too, there are writers who carry the same responsibility. Yet building a world of thought in eleven languages, carrying it beyond books and keeping it constantly up to date, and speaking to people in different parts of the world through the contemporary essays I publish regularly — for me, this is that responsibility transformed into a broader vision.
In an age when desires and means do not always keep pace with each other, sustaining this work is not easy. My books are, of course, a separate and fundamental part of this journey. Even so, undertaking to keep such an extensive site online, to develop it and to nourish it with new texts was a decision in its own right. I made that decision without hesitation, because this effort gives me inner peace.
I believe that every person ought to contribute something to the world, one way or another. The structures, infrastructures and industrial products that human beings create carry great value, yet in time they age, change or are transformed. Ideas and books, however, can cross the ages; they can leave lasting traces on humanity’s journey of thought and open new paths for generations to come.
What I have read, what I have thought and what I have lived through have found their way into my books. To these are now added the new essays I will share with the world. Being able to bring my thoughts to people is, for me, a responsibility before it is a privilege.
On this site, no one’s belief, religion, nationality or identity is judged. No one is told what to think. As a writer, I express my own thoughts openly and recount what I see and what I question through my books and essays. The reader is free to agree, to object, or to build a path of thought of their own.
I have never considered myself above other people; nor have I considered myself beneath them. I have made it my mission to look at people from a place of equality, and yet to give voice to what I see from where I stand, rather than passing over it in silence.
This site is the visible form of that mission, open to the world in eleven languages.
